Towboats : Sanger DXII with 5.7L passes noise limit test!

One of my extra special neighbors sent three sheriff deputies to my ski site the day after the 4th of July to respond to what they said was a complaint regarding 'boat noise' on the private lake. The entourage of sheriffs came equipped with their expensive decibel measuring instruments. They measured the boat's sound at the back near the exhaust ports with the boat idling. Then they made numerouse measurements with the boat towing barefooters with a boat load of four people and skier in tow, just a driver in the boat with a skier, etc. etc. I sat on shore with the sheriffs and watched the readings as they made their measurements. I was surprised at how little the noise levels went up with variations in operation. Minnesota statues declares any watercraft operating in excess of 82 decibels is illegal. The 2000 Sanger DXII 5.7L with 330hp Black Scorpian barely topped 76 decibels. The deputies said it was one of the quietest boats they ever measured. After that, they seemed more interested in watching us foot...and asked if we would give them a show. We even invited them back out to learn how to foot. Pretty good group of badges.

BTW...the neighbor who sent them over called last night to invite me out to breakfast and apologize for sending in the troops....I declined.

Thought this might be useful information if any of you ever get questioned on the noise output of your boat.

Edited by Minion Gus - Today at 5:14pm

When the Merc hatched, he replaced it with an E-TEC. I have not skied it yet, but the guys who have that I have talked to said the wake went from absolutely perfect with the Merc to absolutely miserable with the E-TEC. Sounds like the same transom setting and same prop were used.

How the exhaust breaks up and is distributed can either make big craters or a lot of fine bubbles.. The Johnson/Evinrudes of years past had an issue with CRATERS and very low density water that made you sink.. I recently ran a week long clinic with a new Evinrude and it was wonderful... But this boat you are looking at failed the ABC boat test due to the wake issues of the Johnson.... Personally I wouldnt touch it with an 11 foot pole unless you plan on marrying it... Highly likely you will end up with it as a life long partner...
